Beaufort in the
Movies
It has been 30 years since
Colonel Bull Meecham first flew his Marine fighter jet
over the friendly skies of Beaufort, South Carolina.
Colonel Meecham is of course the central character from
the Pat Conroy novel, The Great Santini. The story was
so compelling that Hollywood took notice, and in 1978
filmmakers came to this tiny sea island to scout for the
movie. The rest, as they say, is history. More than 20
movies have used the Lowcountry's sweeping marsh vistas
and jungle-like vegetation as backdrops for successful
movies including Forrest Gump, The Prince of Tides, The
Big Chill, and Rules of Engagement. For more information
about Beaufort and the surrounding sea islands visit
